03 Mar Architect Rafael Viñoly 1944-2023
With deep regret, the Pan American Federation of Architects Associations informs of the death of Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, deserving of the Gold Medal architect recognition of the XXV Pan American Congress of Architects, held in Asuncion, Paraguay in 2016.
Born in Uruguay in 1944, his upbringing and education took place in Argentina where he studied at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Buenos Aires, from which he graduated in 1969. He developed his work experience in that country as a member of the MSGSSV studio until his emigration to the United States in 1978, where he formed his own office Rafael Viñoly Architects in 1983, which he has maintained to date. In 1996 he won the competition for the Tokyo International Forum (Japan) which projected him internationally. Brilliant, polemic, controversial, his thought never went unnoticed, contributing to the debate on the best architecture. His varied and reflective works leave an important legacy in American countries such as the United States, Argentina and Uruguay, the country he chose to live in during his last years.
